The new drug, Viagra, will be available in the U. S. at a cost of $5 for a supply of 50 tablets. Pfizer, which sells the drug for as much as $1 per tablet, said the drug has been approved to treat erectile dysfunction in men.
It's the latest in a series of recent safety studies that have found that some men who suffer from erectile dysfunction can safely and effectively use Viagra.
"This is a first for the company, and it has been a long time coming," said Mark S. Rothman, a professor of sexual health at Harvard Medical School.
"This is a big step forward for the drug company, which is currently reviewing all the data on Viagra. And it will probably help to reduce the risk of erectile dysfunction among men who do not respond to medication," said Robert K. Schilach, a professor of sexual medicine at Harvard Medical School.
"This is a major step forward for the company and it will likely be the first drug to treat sexual dysfunction with sildenafil," said K. J. Hamer, a professor of pharmacy at Harvard Medical School.
"It will also help to prevent the development of sexually transmitted diseases and other complications, including diabetes, in the future."
Viagra was approved for use by the U. Food and Drug Administration on Jan. 25 and is expected to be available by mid-April. A prescription is needed for the drug for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, but it will be available through the federal government-funded National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).
The FDA said it plans to evaluate the drug in its final review and in the coming months.
In March, Pfizer announced that it had granted a 30-month marketing exclusivity on Viagra, which it is expected to launch in the next three years.
"We will continue to support the pharmaceutical industry for the full year of our regulatory exclusivity," said Dr. John W. Dolan, a professor of pharmacy at Columbia University College of Pharmacy.
This was a big step forward for Pfizer, who already had an FDA advisory panel to consider approving the drug in 2004.However, Dolan said he believes that the FDA could not wait until after the approval of Viagra was completed to approve the drug for use.
"This is an important first step, but it is important to take steps in the way we have managed to get the approval of the FDA in order to ensure that the drug is safe," said Dolan.
The FDA advisory panel recommended that the drug could not be prescribed for men who had been taking nitrate-based drugs such as nitroglycerin, a drug used for the treatment of angina.
The committee also recommended that the drug be used only for sexual arousal in men and not for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
The panel also recommended that Pfizer's decision not to use Viagra be made in consultation with its health care team, and that the company be allowed to continue to develop new drugs for erectile dysfunction. The drug would be launched in the U. in the next two years.
A Pfizer spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Viagra is also approved by the FDA to treat erectile dysfunction, but there is currently no Food and Drug Administration approved drug for its use in men with erectile dysfunction.
